If all those are a bit too highbrow for you, then other one-month stays include the more low-rent (but possibly more pleasurable) 10 to Midnight (1983), Bolero (1984), Hannie Caulder (1972), A Show of Force (1990), and Walking Tall (1973). Meanwhile, your kids (or the one still inside you) will soon be without Race for Your Life, Charlie Brown (1977), The Monster Squad (1987), and the evergreen Charlotte's Web (1973). All of these will be streaming through midnight on August 30 (full list below).

Unfortunately, along with those silents Prime is also saying goodbye to a few other worthy titles, including two by Hong Kong legend Wong Kar-Wai, Fallen Angels (1995) and Happy Together (1997); a trio of Italian flicks starring Marcello Mastroianni and Sophia Loren: Marriage, Italian Style (1964), Sunflower (1970), and Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (1963); Michelangelo Antonioni's first feature film, Story of a Love Affair (1950); and L.M. Kit Carson's groundbreaking David Holzman's Diary (1967), which in many ways was ground zero for today's reality television (and is essential viewing for students of cinéma vérité).
In other words, any movie buffs out there may want to cancel their outdoor plans for the next week. And while you're streaming, let's all cross our fingers that this isn't a sign of things to come. [9/3 NOTE: All but three of the Kino titles—Dr. Caligari, The Doll, and Dr. Mabuse—were renewed at the last minute. So, um...never mind.]

I do see the jerky playback on SS you were talking about--strange (although more annoying than unwatchable, at least on my Roku). Prime's public domain version of the film is smoother but looks like crap. The Netflix version is apparently okay, and the Hulu version, which I looked at, is also very smooth.
For further comparison I took a look at several of the Kino silents on Prime, and all of those looked fine. Strange about Scarlet Street, though. I assume you alert Amazon to this problem when you encounter it? It's too late for this title, of course, but maybe in the future they can address it.
How can you tell when content on Amazon Prime is expiring? I generally watch Prime Content either on my iPad or on TV through my Roku, and I don't see any expiration dates on those sites.
As far as I know, the only way to see if a title is expiring from Prime is by looking at it in a browser--either in your watchlist or by hovering your cursor over it in the "Customers Who Watched This Item Also Watched" row. For an example of expiring titles in a watchlist, see the main image in my June 8 post.
Thanks, David.
