New in September: Movie Overload

Up In the Air
I've been trying to finish this post since last week, but there have been so many new additions to Amazon Prime since then, it's taken me much longer than expected. While Netflix is busy shedding older catalog titles left and right in favor of exclusive content, Prime continues to bulk up its film library with an enormous assortment of new arrivals. A number of them (such as The Captains, The Blair Witch Project, and Up In the Air) also just showed up on Netflix, but unlike Netflix—who's letting its licensing agreement with Epix expire on September 30—Prime won't be losing those titles at the end of the month. Amazon also seems to have picked up a major chunk of the hundreds of 2nd- and 3rd-tier older titles Netflix began shedding without warning back in July.

Here for one month only

That doesn't mean Amazon is entirely off the hook, however. Once again Prime picked up a number of older films that already come with an expiration date. Those include notables like Street Smart, The Gambler, Racing with the Moon, and West Side Story. Why this behavior, which also occurred last month, is being repeated is a mystery (to those of us on the outside, anyway), but we can only hope it doesn't become the new normal. In the meantime, here are the new titles marked to expire on 9/29. If their status changes or you find any others, please let me know in the comments.

The Bellboy (1960)
The Gambler (1974)
Ghoulies (1984) / Ghoulies II (1988)
Invasion U.S.A. (1985)
Nobody's Fool (1995)
Racing with the Moon (1984)
Sliver (1993)
Some Kind of Hero (1982)
Street Smart (1987)
West Side Story (1961)

'B' westerns

A surprising batch of B westerns made their debut this month—many of which, sadly, are also set to expire on the 29th. Why all these (mostly) obscure oaters can't stick around for a while is a puzzle given how close some of them are to being in the public domain (if they're not already). But if you've ever been curious to experience the simpler, less star-studded pleasures of programmers like Charlie One-Eye and Arizona Bushwhackers, or under-the-radar performances by Barbara Stanwyck (The Furies), John Wayne (In Old California), and Charlton Heston (Arrowhead), you'll want to start queuin' up these puppies now.

The Bravados (1958)
Fort Yuma (1955) - Peter Graves
Frontier Uprising (1961)
Frozen Limits (1939)
Ghost Town (1956)
Gunsight Ridge (1957) - Joel McCrea
Outlaw Trail (1944) - Hoot Gibson

Ride in the Whirlwind (1966) - Jack Nicholson, dir. by Monte Hellman
Roy Colt and Winchester Jack (1970) - dir. by Mario Bava
Sitting Bull (1954)

Expiring 9/29
Arizona Bushwhackers (1967)
Arrowhead (1953) - Charlton Heston, Jack Palance
Black Spurs (1965)
Bullwhip (1958)
Charley One-Eye (1973) - Richard Roundtree
Chattahoochee (1989) - Gary Oldman, Dennis Hopper
The Furies (1950) - Barbara Stanwyck
In Old California (1942) - John Wayne
Johnny Reno (1966)
Law of the Lawless (1964)
The Lonely Man (1957) - Jack Palance, Anthony Perkins
A Man Alone (1955)
Red Garters (1954)
Rustler's Rhapsody (1985)
Tall Stranger (1957) - Joel McCrea

Last-minute reprieves

Despite all the 30-day stays, this month also saw a heartening reversal of fortune, as nearly all of the Kino/Lorber titles scheduled to expire on 9/3 were renewed at the last minute. That's good news for cineastes and silent film fans, as it means further opportunities to enjoy such classics as Battleship Potemkin, David Holzman's Diary, and The Thief of Bagdad. (but not, alas, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, The Doll, or Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler).

Even more Troma

Your very own nymphoid barbarian
Another new batch of Troma pictures also arrived, so now you can proudly add the likes of A Nymphoid Barbarian in Dinosaur Hell and Farts of Darkness to your watchlist. And while you're at it, learn from Lloyd Kaufman himself how to Direct Your Own Damn Movie! Other new additions from the House of Toxie:

Wiseguys vs. Zombies (2003)

All the rest

If you're wondering why I'm not linking to all of this month's titles, it's because there are just too damn many of 'em. Aside from the new releases, I've had to pick and choose what I thought warranted a look, either for its quality or its curiosity value. In the case of the classics and exploitation flicks, admittedly quite a few fall into the not-so-great category and are only listed because, en masse, they represent a significant online resource for grade B (and Z) flicks of every stripe—from WWII actioners to Hammer horror, 1970s TV movies, Italian giallo, Australian sleepers, and even '90s thrillers. It's all there for the next Tarantino wannabe to soak his creative wick in, along with a mixed group of new releases that include a few intriguing documentaries. So, without further ado, Amazon Prime's remaining September arrivals:

David, I just up for Amazon Prime, and am wondering about expiration dates. I couldn't find the information on the site. Do they post this information with the movie, or do you have to go to a different place and see a list. Or should I just check out your blog? Thanks, sorry to bother you. I get confused easily!

I have Prime. It took me a while to figure it out. When you sign into Amazon, on the right by your cart it will say "Hello, STARCHILD Your Account". When you move the mouse over these words one of the options is "Your Watchlist". This will show you the movies and TV shows you saved. If something is expiring then directly above "Remove" for that item it will say "Leaves Prime in 24 days" (or however many days are left). When a movie expires it stays in your Watchlist but the Prime label on the left is gone.

Jordan, Thank you so much! So far, I've found a lot of titles not on Netflix, especially some of the titles Netflix just dumped! Not to mention the free shipping is cool at this time of year, so I will probably keep it. Still, I don't understand why such a wealthy corporation has such a terrible interface. I know they are hoping to sell movies that they don't stream, but that is tacky to me. I'm on the Prime video site, I search for a movie, and they show me one that's for sale! Fortunately, they also have a code so that you don't accidentally purchase something, a pin I set. Have to try it out, or my grandkids will be ordering a ton of stuff. Thanks again!

Yes, Amazon's interface is pretty crappy, but it's something you get used to (aside from the many instances of bad or missing info). One other way you can see if a title is expiring is by hovering your cursor over it in the row "Customers Who Watched This Item Also Watched," which appears on each title's info page just above Product Details. It's a pretty inexact science, which is why any contributions from you guys are very appreciated.
