January's New and Departing Titles

A lot of great movies found their way to Prime since the beginning of January—far more than are departing, fortunately. But with the end of the month fast approaching, let's first tackle:

WHAT'S EXPIRING

Many of these, strangely, are also among the new arrivals (including the always grin-inducing Buckaroo Banzai, David Cronenberg's The Dead Zone, and the original Sabrina), but in general this relatively sparse list constitutes the usual rotating EPIX titles that used to pop on and off Netflix with semi-annual regularity (and are now doing the same over on Hulu). So if you're not sure you'll get a chance to (re)watch Apocalypse Now or Glengarry Glen Ross this month, don't worry: you'll likely see them streaming again by summer. WHAT'S NEW

As mentioned, the influx of new titles in January has been impressive, including new releases such as the visceral throwback western, Bone Tomahawk (2015), returning classics like The Graduate, Shane, and Serpico, a handful of Spaghetti westerns and Pam Grier quickies, and more '80s and '90s flicks than you can shake a stick at. The latter include John Frankenheimer's gritty Elmore Leonard adaptation, 52 Pick-Up, Sydney Pollack's Oscar powerhouse, Out of Africa, and Richard Linklater's cult high-school comedy, Dazed and Confused. And if you enjoy seeing Nicholas Cage going off the rails, you can now catch one of his earliest bug-eyed freakouts in the twisted Vampire's Kiss.

I can also personally recommend Lars von Trier's brilliant Dogville (ignoring the needlessly provocative end credits), Robert Altman's late-career masterpiece, Gosford Park, and Spike Lee's homage to the '70s cop thriller, Inside Man. I've also always been a fan of Mike Nichols' fitfully funny big-budget adaptation of Joseph Heller's wartime satire, Catch-22, which was a critical and financial flop during its 1970 release, but has received numerous reappraisals in the years since. If nothing else, it's fun to see so many big stars of the time feeling their oats in front of Nichols' macabre lens.
